Figure 8s/Drunk Walking

Two exercises for loose leash walking when you have the space to do them.

  1. walking in figure of 8s

Pick a side for your dog to walk on, only reward them on that side with your hand that is closest to the dog. On your inwards turn, if your dog is pulling ahead they will end up with your leg blocking their path, so they learn to yield to your body and where you are. On the outwards turn, if your dog doesn't come with you the leash will go tight and then dog quickly realises to remove that tight feeling they need to catch up to you. They learn how to turn off leash pressure themselves and to be aware of what your body language is telling them. You will find your dog starts to check in and make eye contact more and more.

2. drunk walking

Same again, pick a side for your dog to walk on and walk in one direction for 3-5 steps, then another direction, then another direction and another direction. Dogs often predict we are just moving forwards so they start to pull. Changing directions keeps them guessing as they never quite know which way we are going so they start to check in more and become more aware of us being there on the walk too. Again this also teaches them how to turn off the leash pressure when the leash goes tight.

Let me know how you get on with these exercises.
